Chris Benson of Benson Amps and Steve Harmon of Synthrotek have a little side project called Harben Audio. Mostly, they take classic effects like the Colorsound Overdriver and build smaller, more reliable, updated versions like their Synesthesia Pre-Amp pedal. That's the idea behind the new Octave Fuzz: a smaller, reliable and affordable version of the 70's holy grail of raucous guitar, the Univox Super Fuzz. That pedal, and a love for the bands that came out of the 90's Northwest music scene led Chris on a search that ended with the Octave Fuzz. In the demo below, you'll see the concept art (pictured above is a prototype) of the finished project, and if you look closely, you'll notice the subtitle of the pedal is "NW Saturation". Chris is an easygoing dude, but if you want to earn a few brownie points, maybe listen to Botch's We Are The Romans before you talk to him. The Octave Fuzz, like the original Super Fuzz, splits your signal into two, destroys it, and recombines it in a way that produces a nasty fuzz, with weird octave and ring mod-like qualities showing up from time to time. If you ever wanted to sound like KARP from the Self Titled LP, this is the ticket. If not, don't fret; you can back the controls off and combine this pedal with other effects for beautiful results. But, really, who wants to hear the word "beautiful" in a fuzz review - this thing is an ear splitting decapitation machine. It's not as complicated to dial in as a couple of other modern fuzzes I can think of that come close to this level of destruction, but it produces a far more complex tone. (I won't name them, because this thing is tonally unique, and I don't want you trying to shove it into those boxes.) At its most aggressive, it can be almost unmusical - this is one of those pedals you will both love and hate to have feed back on you. Buy a good set of ear plugs. You will need them.
